Thanks Tracy.
It is nice to see so many organizations working with family literacy
programs to put literacy in the forefront. Book character costumes are a
great idea. We had an Ameila Bedilia in our hallways yesterday.

Subject: RE: [FamilyLiteracy 829] National Family Literacy Day
In Louisville, Kentucky we celebrated last night with an "Every Family
Reads", Trick, Treat, and Read event at the Louisville Free Public
Library. Several organizations came together to provide literacy
activities that included a magic show, karaoke reading, book character
costume show, art activity sponsored by the local art museum, and snack
activity sponsored by us, the JCPS Family Literacy program. Families
made Dirt Desert and Haunted Trail Mix. Every child received a free
book as well as other treats from participating organizations including
PTA, United Way, PBS, YMCA, Girl Scouts, and the Everyone Reads parent
engagement committee. The book character costumes were great-lots of
Harry Potters! The best, however, was a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree !
The event coincided wonderfully with a family reading photography
collection that the library opened this week. Everyone had a great
time! Our Family Literacy program really enjoyed being a part of this
event and we hope to continue it again next year.

Today is National Family Literacy Day! Are you doing anything special to
celebrate?
The National Center for Family Literacy, Louisville, KY, has planned
activities in several locations around the country-from reading books
and sharing resources in McDonald's restaurants in California to helping
issue the Great American Word Challenge in New York City. (Take a look
at www.greatamericanwordchallenge.com
<http://www.greatamericanworldchallenge.com/> )
Please share with list subscribers how your program is celebrating and
spreading the word about family literacy. We all need good ideas.
Have a good family literacy day and have fun!
