I received a notice from Bonnie Freeman saying that the deadline to
nominate student speakers for the National Center for Family Literacy
Conference has been extended. Nominations must be received by 5:00 pm on
December 1, 2008. Please read Bonnie's letter for additional details.
All nominations should be e-mailed to her at bfreeman at famlit.org.

Dear Colleagues,

One of the highlights of my professional career is the family literacy
conference and meeting the student speakers.

It is time to nominate those student speakers. This year we would like
to highlight your best! (As always smile ). Please review the criteria
below and send the nominations directly to me at bfreeman at famlit.org.:
include student speaker in your subject line. If you choose to mail the
nomination, send it to the address below.

As you are considering your students think of their strengths, their
comfort level in front of groups and their story. We would like to
demonstrate the diversity of family literacy programming across this
country, so, include fathers, grandparents, as well as mothers. In
addition, we must include programming from the various regions of the
country and the populations represented in those regions. Therefore,
consider the following guidelines.

The National Conference on Family Literacy Student Speaker Nomination
Guidelines:

Student speakers for the National Conference on Family Literacy 2009 (
March 1 - 3) must have:

Attended a 4 - component family literacy program:

* Completed 1 or 2 years in the program, and

* Accomplished goals in the following areas:

o family

o personal

o academic

Experience speaking

* Completed at least 3 speaking engagements , either

o Own class

o Local groups, or

o State family literacy conferences

In addition, the student must demonstrate that he/she:

* Is fluent in English

* Has spoken in front of groups of 50 - 100 people

* Will be supported by the staff of the family literacy program

The student must be willing to travel to Orlando, arrive on the Saturday
before the Conference (March 1 - 3, 2009), and be available for an
on-site practice session on Sunday prior to the Opening session.

We are particularly interested in students who have developed strategies
for supporting their children's academic development, have begun to
accomplish some of their employment or vocational goals and/or have
developed supportive strategies to include their extended family.

Family literacy programs that submit nominations:

* Must follow the federal definition for family literacy services

* Must have been funded as a 4 component program for three years

* Must have staff that will support the student as they write and
perfect their speech

The deadline for the nominations has been extended to December 1, 2008
5:00 pm (EST).

I look forward to reviewing the student nominations we receive and
meeting the subsequent winners. We will provide the travel expenses for
the student speakers

chosen, their lodging, food, and conference registration. The decision
will be announced on December 5, 2008.

As always,

With families in mind

Bonnie
